The premium you pay isn't for faster manufacturing – it's for pulling from finished goods inventory that someone else reserved, or for expediting a distributor's own stock rotation.

That's why I now tell our engineers: if you need a bearing fast, don't ask for the cheapest – ask for the most available in the supply chain. NSK's product range is broad, but not every model is equally stocked. For example, standard 6200-series deep groove ball bearings are almost always available off the shelf. But precision spindle bearings like the P4/UP class? Those require coordination with authorized channel partners.

So glad I paid that rush fee. Almost went with the cheaper option to save $420, which would have meant explaining to our client why their $50,000 production run was late. Dodged a bullet.
