VFDs can cause electrical discharge through the bearing if the motor isn’t properly grounded. That leads to fluting—tiny tracks on the bearing raceway—which causes noise and early failure. (Not great for your equipment uptime.)

In my experience, specifying insulated bearings (NSK offers them) for VFD-driven motors is a smart move. The added upfront cost is tiny compared to the downtime if a standard bearing fails early. Roughly speaking, we’ve seen bearing life double in VFD applications after switching to insulated variants.

Looking back, I should have specified insulated bearings on the first motor replacement we did in 2022. At the time, I didn’t know. Now I do.

7. How do I avoid getting stuck with the wrong bearing order?

Don’t hold me to this, but I’d say 70% of the bearing ordering mistakes I’ve seen come from three things:

  • Relying on part numbers without verifying the application (load, speed, environment)
  • Choosing price over technical fit
  • Not checking inventory availability before assuming something will ship fast

Here's my process now: I get the application specs first. Then I cross-check against the NSK catalog or our distributor’s engineer. Then I order. It takes an extra 30 minutes, but it’s saved us thousands in returns and downtime.

One more thing: always ask about lead times. I learned this one in Q3 2023 when we needed a specific tapered roller bearing for a critical repair.
